What Is Apsan Park?

Apsan (앞산, "Front Mountain") is a 660-meter peak rising directly south of Daegu's city center. The surrounding park covers a huge forested area laced with hiking trails, a cable car, an observatory, a war memorial museum and several temples. It is Daegu's most popular outdoor escape and the best place in the city for panoramic views.

The park is free to enter and accessible year-round. Spring brings cherry blossoms along the lower trails, autumn brings vivid foliage, and winter snow occasionally dusts the summit ridge.

Cable Car & Observatory

The Apsan Cable Car (gondola) runs from the lower station near the park entrance to an upper station at approximately 400 meters elevation. The 5-minute ride offers sweeping views of Daegu's urban basin and the surrounding mountain ring.

  • Operating hours: 10:00-18:00 (last ascent 17:30). Extended to 19:00 in summer.
  • Closed during high winds or severe weather.
  • Weekends and holidays often have 20-30 minute waits. Weekday mornings are quietest.

From the upper cable car station, a 15-minute walk along a paved path leads to Apsan Observatory, a covered viewing platform with orientation panels identifying peaks and landmarks across Daegu. On clear days, visibility extends to Palgongsan Mountain to the north.

Take the cable car up and hike down. The descent takes about 40-50 minutes on the main trail and passes through beautiful forest.

Hiking Trails

Apsan has a network of well-marked trails ranging from easy forest walks to moderate ridge hikes. Most are accessible to anyone with reasonable fitness.

  • Hiking boots recommended for the summit trail; sneakers fine for lower loops.
  • Spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November) are the best hiking seasons.
Summer temperatures in Daegu can exceed 35 °C. If hiking in July or August, start early (before 8:00) and carry at least 1.5 liters of water per person.

Nakdong River War Memorial

Located on the lower slopes near the Anjiranggol entrance, this museum and outdoor exhibition covers the Nakdong River battles of 1950 — the desperate defensive perimeter that held Daegu and Busan until the Incheon Landing turned the war. Exhibits include tanks, artillery, dioramas and personal accounts.

  • Admission: Free.
  • Hours: 9:00-18:00 (closed Mondays).
  • English information panels are available but limited — consider a translation app.
  • The outdoor weapons garden is open even when the museum is closed.
The memorial is a respectful, educational site. Photography is allowed throughout.
