Gwangju
Korea's City of Democracy & Arts
Why Visit Gwangju?
Gwangju is Korea's sixth-largest city and its cultural soul — the birthplace of the 1980 May 18 democracy uprising, home to the Gwangju Biennale (Asia's oldest contemporary art biennial), and widely agreed to have the best food in Korea. It sits in the Jeolla region, whose cuisine is so legendary that visitors from Seoul come specifically to eat.
Downtown Geumnam-ro is compact and walkable. The Asia Culture Center and May 18 Memorial Park are both here. Mudeungsan National Park is 20 min east — Gwangju's defining mountain. Three days is plenty.
