Quick Answer: The Two Best Seasons

The best times to visit South Korea are autumn (late September to early November) and spring (late March to early May). Autumn offers crisp, dry weather and stunning foliage from mid-October to early November. Spring brings cherry blossoms from late March to mid-April and mild temperatures.

Summer (June-August) is hot, humid and includes the monsoon season (jangma) in July and early August. Winter (December to February) is cold and dry with excellent skiing and almost no crowds.

Verify visa-waiver and K-ETA requirements at hikorea.go.kr and k-eta.go.kr before booking. Rules change periodically.

Peak, Shoulder & Low Season

Peak Season

Cherry blossom (late March - mid April) and autumn foliage (mid October - early November) are peak season. Hotels and KTX tickets should be booked 6-8 weeks ahead. Expect crowded sights and 15-30% higher hotel prices.

Shoulder Season

May, early June, early September and late November are shoulder season. Great weather, fewer crowds and moderate prices. Excellent value for money.

Low Season

July-August (monsoon + heat) and January-February (cold) are low season for most visitors. Hotels drop significantly and attractions are uncrowded. Ski resorts and winter festivals thrive during this time.

Season-by-Season Comparison

  • Spring: cherry blossoms, mild temperatures, busy but manageable.
  • Summer: hot, humid, wet in July; best for Jeju beaches and summer festivals.
  • Autumn: clearest skies, foliage, most photogenic season overall.
  • Winter: snow, ski resorts, ice fishing, Christmas lights and quiet sights.
If you only have one trip, go in mid-October. You'll get near-perfect weather, fall foliage, clear skies for DMZ viewing and lower humidity.

How to Choose Your Dates

Choose spring if cherry blossoms, flowers and palace visits are priorities. Choose autumn for hiking, foliage and the best overall weather. Choose winter if you want to ski at Yongpyong or Vivaldi Park, or save money. Choose summer only if you're focused on Jeju beaches or specific events like the Boryeong Mud Festival.

Book KTX tickets early during peak foliage and blossom windows. Trains to Busan and Gyeongju sell out weekend seats days ahead.
