What Is Seongsan Ilchulbong?

Seongsan Ilchulbong (성산일출봉), commonly called Sunrise Peak, is a 182-meter-high tuff cone formed by a hydrovolcanic eruption about 5,000 years ago off the eastern tip of Jeju Island. Originally a separate islet, it is now connected to the mainland by a low sandy strip built up over centuries by sediment.

The peak was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007 as part of the Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes designation. Its bowl-shaped crater, 600 meters in diameter and filled with grass, is one of the most photographed natural landmarks in South Korea. At sunrise, the light flooding over the ocean and into the crater is extraordinary.

Seongsan Ilchulbong means "Castle Mountain Sunrise Peak" in Korean — a name that perfectly describes both its fortress-like shape and its fame as a sunrise viewing spot.

The Sunrise Hike

The hike to the crater rim is short but steep: about 30 minutes up well-maintained stairs and a paved path. The total distance is roughly 600 meters one way with an elevation gain of around 180 meters. It is not technically difficult, but the stairs can be tiring.

Timing Your Sunrise Visit

March06:4506:00
May05:3004:45
July05:2504:40
September06:1005:25
November06:5506:10

The park opens early specifically for sunrise visitors. Gates open approximately one hour before sunrise — check the exact time at the ticket booth or your accommodation the evening before. The best position is the viewing platform on the northeastern rim, which faces directly into the rising sun.

  • Arrive at the entrance at least 50 minutes before sunrise to allow time for the hike.
  • Bring a headlamp or use your phone flashlight — the initial path is dark before dawn.
  • The crater rim has limited space. Weekends and holidays fill up fast, especially in summer.
  • After watching the sunrise, take time to walk the crater rim path for panoramic views of Udo Island and the coastline.
If you are not a morning person, sunset visits are also beautiful and far less crowded. The western side of the rim catches golden light in the evening.

Trail Conditions

The path is paved and well maintained with handrails on the steeper sections. It is manageable for most fitness levels including older visitors and children over 5. There is no alternative route — everyone takes the same stairs up and down.

The stairs are exposed and can be windy. In winter, ice can form on the steps in early morning. Wear shoes with good grip and hold the handrails.

Haenyeo Women Divers

At the base of Seongsan Ilchulbong, near the harbor, you can watch haenyeo (해녀) — Jeju's legendary women free-divers — harvest sea urchins, abalone, conch and seaweed from the ocean without breathing equipment. This tradition dates back centuries and was inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2016.

Live diving demonstrations are held daily (weather permitting) at the haenyeo performance area near the Seongsan harbor. Shows typically run at 13:30 and 15:00 and last about 20 minutes. After the demonstration, fresh seafood is available for purchase at nearby stalls.

  • Demonstrations are free to watch.
  • Schedule varies by season and weather — cancelled in rough seas or extreme cold.
  • The haenyeo range in age from 50s to 80s. Their endurance and skill are remarkable.
  • Fresh sea urchin and abalone from the haenyeo can be bought at harborside stalls for ₩10,000-30,000.
The haenyeo tradition is declining as younger generations choose other careers. Watching the demonstration supports the preservation of this UNESCO-recognized cultural heritage.
