What Is Taejongdae?
Taejongdae Resort Park sits on the southern tip of Yeongdo Island, a short drive or bus ride from Nampo-dong. Named after the Silla Dynasty King Taejong Muyeol, who allegedly loved the scenery so much he practiced archery here, the park covers 1.5 square kilometers of forested cliffs dropping dramatically into the Korea Strait.
On clear days you can see the Japanese island of Tsushima across the water. The park combines coastal cliff walks, a historic lighthouse, rock formations and fresh seafood stalls — it is one of Busan's most rewarding half-day trips.
Taejongdae was designated a national monument (Natural Monument No. 438) for its geological formations and coastal forest.
Cliff Trails & Walking Routes
The main loop trail is about 4.3 km and takes 1.5 to 2 hours at a comfortable pace. The path is mostly paved with some staircase sections.
- Start at the main gate and follow the road or take the Danubi train to the first stop.
- Walk counter-clockwise for the best sequence: forest first, then cliffs, then lighthouse.
- The Suicide Rock viewpoint (named for its sheer drop, not an endorsement) offers the most dramatic cliff face.
- Continue past rocky coves with wave-carved formations.
- The trail descends to the Yeongdo Lighthouse area — the lowest and most scenic point.
- Climb back up via staircases (about 200 steps) or catch the Danubi train from the bottom.
The descent to the lighthouse involves steep stairs. If you have knee problems, take the Danubi train down and walk up instead — or ride both ways.
Yeongdo Lighthouse & Viewpoints
The white Yeongdo Lighthouse sits at the southern tip of the park on a rocky promontory. Built in 1906, it is one of the oldest lighthouses in Korea and still operational. The surrounding viewing platform offers 180-degree ocean panoramas.
- Observatory deck: Free access. Look south toward Tsushima (visible on clear days, about 50 km away).
- Mother and child statue: A popular photo spot near the lighthouse.
- Rocky shoreline: Accessible via short side trails. Excellent for photos but watch your footing on wet rocks.
- Sunset viewing: The lighthouse area faces south-southwest, making it a strong sunset spot from April through September.
Binoculars (₩500 coin-operated) are available at the observatory for spotting Tsushima Island.
Danubi Train
The Danubi is a small, open-sided sightseeing train that loops the park road, stopping at four stations. It is useful for covering the uphill sections or for visitors with limited mobility.
| Detail | Info |
|---|
| Route | Circular loop with 4 stops |
| Fare | ₩3,000 adults, ₩2,000 children |
| Frequency | Every 15-20 minutes |
| Operating hours | 09:00-18:00 (last train varies by season) |
| Ride time | Full loop about 30 minutes |
You can hop on and off at any stop. Most visitors ride down to the lighthouse area and walk back up, or vice versa.
The Danubi train gets crowded on weekends. If you visit on a Saturday or Sunday, consider walking the full loop and skipping the train to avoid queues.
Seafood at the Bottom
Near the bottom of the cliff trail, close to the lighthouse, a cluster of outdoor seafood restaurants serves freshly caught fish, shellfish and Korean seafood staples. Eating fresh haemul (seafood) with crashing waves as your backdrop is one of the highlights of a Taejongdae visit.
| Dish | Typical Price | Notes |
|---|
| Jogae-gui (grilled clams) | ₩15,000-25,000 | Tabletop grill with butter and garlic |
| Hoe (raw fish platter) | ₩25,000-40,000 | Seasonal catch, usually flatfish or rockfish |
| Haemul ramyeon | ₩8,000-10,000 | Instant noodles with fresh seafood added |
| Grilled squid | ₩10,000-15,000 | Charcoal-grilled whole squid |
| Soju + beer | ₩4,000-5,000 | The classic Korean pairing |
The seafood stalls at the bottom of the cliff are more expensive than in-town restaurants. You are paying for the view and location. Budget accordingly.
Costs
| Item | Cost |
|---|
| Park entry | Free |
| Danubi train | ₩3,000 adults / ₩2,000 children |
| Binocular viewing | ₩500 |
| Seafood lunch (1 person) | ₩15,000-30,000 |

Practical Tips
- Wear sturdy shoes — the trail has uneven steps and can be slippery after rain.
- Bring water and sunscreen. Shade is available in the forest sections but the clifftop viewpoints are exposed.
- The park closes during severe weather (typhoons, heavy rain). Check conditions before traveling.
- Peak cherry-blossom season (late March to early April) makes the forested sections especially beautiful.
- Allow 2 to 3 hours for a full visit including the trail, lighthouse and a seafood stop.
- Restrooms are available at the main gate, near the Danubi train stations and at the lighthouse area.
- The park is dog-friendly on a leash.
Stay behind safety barriers at all cliff viewpoints. The drops are sheer and rocks can be loose near edges.
