What Is Cheonjeyeon Falls?

Cheonjeyeon Falls (천제연폭포) is a three-tiered waterfall set in a lush subtropical gorge within the Jungmun resort area on Jeju's southern coast. The name translates to "Pond of God" or "Pond of the Emperor of Heaven," rooted in a legend that seven celestial nymphs would descend at night to bathe in its pools.

Unlike Jeju's other famous waterfalls (Cheonjiyeon and Jeongbang), Cheonjeyeon is a series of three connected cascades rather than a single drop. A well-maintained walking trail links all three falls and crosses the photogenic Seonimgyo arch bridge, making it a complete attraction that takes 40-90 minutes to explore.

Do not confuse Cheonjeyeon (천제연) with Cheonjiyeon (천지연). They are different waterfalls with similar-sounding names. Cheonjiyeon is in central Seogwipo; Cheonjeyeon is in Jungmun, about 10 minutes west by car.

The Three Cascades

First Cascade

The first and most dramatic of the three falls drops 22 meters into a deep emerald pool surrounded by dense subtropical vegetation. The water source is an underground spring that emerges from the cliff face, meaning the first cascade only flows strongly after heavy rain. In dry periods, it can slow to a trickle or stop entirely.

A viewing platform overlooks the pool from above. Stairs descend closer to the water level, though the pool itself is off limits for swimming.

Second Cascade

The second cascade flows over a wide, stepped rock shelf and is the most reliable of the three — it tends to have water flow year-round. The Seonimgyo bridge arches above this section, offering excellent views from above.

Third Cascade

The third cascade is the furthest downstream and drops into a pool that eventually empties into the ocean. It is less visited than the first two, and the trail to reach it involves more stairs. The surrounding forest canopy gives this section a quiet, secluded feel.

For the best waterfall flow, visit during or immediately after Jeju's rainy season (June-September). The first cascade is especially impressive after heavy rainfall.

Seonimgyo Bridge & Walking Trail

Seonimgyo (선임교) is an elegant arch bridge that spans the gorge between the first and second cascades. Decorated with carved nymph figures inspired by the Cheonjeyeon legend, it is one of the most photographed structures in Jungmun and serves as the visual centerpiece of the falls complex.

The walking trail is a loop that descends from the entrance, passes the first cascade viewpoint, crosses Seonimgyo bridge, continues to the second and third cascades, and returns to the entrance. The total distance is about 1.5 kilometers.

  • The trail involves about 300 stairs in total (up and down combined).
  • Allow 40-60 minutes for a comfortable walk, or 90 minutes if you linger at each cascade.
  • The path is paved but can be slippery when wet — wear shoes with grip.
  • Benches and rest points are positioned along the trail.
  • The gorge is shaded by subtropical vegetation, making it cooler than the surrounding area.
The stairs can be challenging for visitors with mobility issues. There is no wheelchair-accessible route to the falls.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal visit combines good water flow with manageable crowds. Late September through October hits that sweet spot — summer rains have recharged the falls but the peak tourist season has passed.

Morning visits (before 10:00) are quietest regardless of season. Tour buses typically arrive between 10:30 and 14:00.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Cheonjeyeon and Cheonjiyeon Falls?

They are two different waterfalls with similar-sounding names. Cheonjeyeon (천제연) is a three-tiered waterfall in Jungmun. Cheonjiyeon (천지연) is a single-drop waterfall in central Seogwipo.

Is Cheonjeyeon Falls worth visiting in winter?

The gorge and bridge are beautiful year-round, but the first cascade may have little or no water flow in winter dry season. Visit after rain for the best experience.

How many stairs are there at Cheonjeyeon Falls?

About 300 stairs total across the loop trail. The trail involves descending to the gorge and climbing back up. Allow extra time if stairs are difficult for you.

Can I swim in the waterfall pools?

No. Swimming is prohibited in all three cascade pools for safety and conservation reasons.

How long does it take to visit Cheonjeyeon Falls?

Allow 40-60 minutes for a comfortable walk through all three cascades, or 90 minutes if you take your time and photograph Seonimgyo bridge.

Is Cheonjeyeon Falls accessible for wheelchairs?

Unfortunately, no. The trail involves significant stairs and uneven surfaces. There is no wheelchair-accessible route to the falls or the bridge.

Which is better, Cheonjeyeon or Jeongbang Falls?

Both are worth visiting. Jeongbang is unique as Korea's only waterfall dropping directly into the ocean. Cheonjeyeon offers more variety with three cascades and the Seonimgyo bridge. Visit both if time allows.
