What Is Donghwasa Temple?

Donghwasa (동화사) is a major Buddhist temple complex on the southern slopes of Palgongsan Mountain, about 22 km northeast of central Daegu. Founded in 493 AD during the Silla Kingdom, it is one of the oldest continuously operating temples in Korea and the head temple of the Jogye Order's 9th district.

The temple is most famous for its Tongil Daebul — a 33-meter seated stone Medicine Buddha completed in 1992, the largest of its kind in Korea. The statue was built as a prayer for Korean reunification and dominates the upper terrace with views of the mountain ridges.

Donghwasa is an active religious site. Dress modestly, speak quietly in the halls and remove shoes before entering buildings.

What to See

Tongil Daebul (33m Medicine Buddha)

The massive stone Buddha sits on an elevated terrace above the main temple complex. Climb the stone stairway for close-up views and panoramas of Palgongsan's forested ridges. The surrounding plaza includes explanation panels in Korean and English.

Main Temple Hall (Daeungjeon)

The principal worship hall houses a golden Sakyamuni Buddha triad. The interior woodwork and ceiling paintings are beautifully preserved. Morning and evening chanting services are open to visitors — sit quietly on the side.

Bongseoru Pavilion

An elegant two-story wooden pavilion overlooking the temple courtyard. It houses the large temple bell and is one of the most photographed structures in the complex.

Biroam Hermitage

A 20-minute uphill walk from the main temple leads to this small hermitage with a seated stone Vairocana Buddha dating to the Unified Silla period (9th century). The carving is designated as a national treasure.

  • Stone pagoda garden — collection of pagodas spanning different dynasties.
  • Lotus pond — especially beautiful in July when the lotus flowers bloom.
  • Temple museum — small exhibition of Buddhist art and temple history.
Visit early morning (before 9:00) to experience the temple at its most peaceful. You may catch the end of the monks' morning chanting.
