Why Visit Gyeongju?
Gyeongju is Korea's "museum without walls" — the capital of the Silla dynasty for nearly 1,000 years (57 BC - 935 AD), and today the country's greatest concentration of UNESCO heritage. Royal tombs sit in parks in the middle of town. Bulguksa temple and the Seokguram grotto are Korean Buddhism's masterpieces. Cheomseongdae, the oldest astronomical observatory in East Asia, still stands from the 7th century. Gyeongju is small — you can see the main tomb cluster, Cheomseongdae, and Donggung Palace on foot in one afternoon. Bulguksa and Seokguram require a bus or taxi. Two nights is the sweet spot. Stay in a traditional hanok guesthouse in Gyochon Village for the full experience.
⭐ Best time: April (cherry blossoms at Bomun Lake and the tombs) and mid-October to early November (autumn foliage + silvergrass). These are the most photographed weeks in Korea.
