Why Visit Jeju Island?
Jeju is a volcanic island 85 km off Korea's southern coast — UNESCO-listed, tropical by Korean standards, and the country's honeymoon capital. At its center rises Hallasan, South Korea's highest peak (1,947 m). Around its edges: black-sand beaches, lava tubes, waterfalls, the famous haenyeo (female free-divers), orange groves, and a coastline of basalt columns shaped by 1.8 million years of eruptions.
Jeju City (north) is where the airport is; Seogwipo (south) is where the best scenery is. You need a rental car — public transport is minimal. Most visitors come for 3-4 days; international budget airlines fly in from Seoul every 15 minutes (the world's busiest air route).

Safety in Jeju Island
✅ Jeju safety: Extremely safe. Main risks are natural — the ocean, mountain weather, and driving. Hallasan weather changes fast; wear proper boots. Jellyfish can appear August. Typhoons possible July-September.
Safest areas for visitors
- Everywhere — Crime is rare. Locals leave keys in ignitions at trailheads.
- Hallasan — Check weather. Start early — trails close entry after ~12:30.
- Beaches — Watch for rip currents at Hamdeok and Hyeopjae. Lifeguards June-August.
- Roads — Tourist rentals cause most crashes. Drive slowly; farmers cross roads.
🚗 Driving tip: You need an International Driving Permit (IDP) plus your home licence to rent a car. Jeju is left of the wheel, right of the road. Speed cameras are frequent and unforgiving.

- Heuk dwaeji (black pork BBQ) — Jeju's specialty, native pig breed. Donsadon and Cheonjeyeon restaurants.
- Galchi jorim — braised cutlassfish in spicy sauce. Worth the bones.
- Omegi tteok — millet rice cakes from the volcanic highlands.
- Abalone porridge (jeonbok-juk) — haenyeo-caught shellfish over rice.
- Tangerine everything — Jeju grows Korea's entire tangerine crop. Juice, cakes, chocolates, cosmetics.
Must-try drinks
- Hallasan soju — made with volcanic spring water. Clean, smooth.
- Tangerine makgeolli — local twist on rice wine.
- Ocean-view cafés in Aewol — Monsant by G-Dragon is the famous one.
🐷 Black pork tip: Real heuk dwaeji has a black hoof and dark bristles visible on the meat. Restaurants displaying a government certification plaque are your best bet.
